Hackaton Winners Presentation Team Child
Join us at the TeamChild Hackathon Demo Day Webinar hosted by Pro Bono Net, and LSNTAP on Friday, December 9, 2016, 10:00am We will showcase results of the hackathon and a brief discussion on the future of civic technology’s role in expanding legal access.
In the legal aid community there has been an increasing capacity and enthusiasm about using hackathon as a way to develop innovations in areas of law and communities that are currently underserved through traditional legal services approach. In this call--we will share the basics of what a hackathon is--and go over how to organize one, using a recent Hackathon sponsored by Team Child in the area of Disrupting the School to Prison Pipeline. Miguel Willis, of the ATJ Fellows, will share how he goes about organizing successful hackathon--and then the winners of the October competition will have a chance to share their pitch and gather feedback from the legal services tech community.
Anyone interested in learning more about hackathon and learning how to take the pilots to product in invited!

TeamChild's Reinstating Suspended Licenses (RSL)
TeamChild is a nationally recognized nonprofit serving children in crisis across Washington State for 20 years. By drawing on its legal expertise, it works to break the cycle of arrest and detention that drives the school-to-prison pipeline. According to the Center for Justice, as of 2011, nearly 300,000 WA licenses were suspended for failure to pay tickets. Many individuals continue to drive, unaware that their license has been suspended, which can result in misdemeanor criminal charges. These charges affect a youth’s ability to seal their record, get a job or rent a home. TeamChild wanted to help drivers navigate the complex process to get to the bottom of why their license was suspended and what steps they need to take to get their misdemeanor charges amended to a non-criminal infraction. They may not know how much they owe, in which county or how to pay the outstanding fees. This process is confusing for the average young driver. If we could help them in paying their fees, getting their license reinstated and avoid a conviction for driving without a license, these drivers would not have to wait an additional two years to seal their record due to a new conviction.
Reinstating Suspended Licenses (RSL) is a digital platform that guides drivers through the complex process of getting licenses reinstated. With basic information generated through the Department of Licensing website, our mobile friendly website directs drivers to local relicensing programs, provides information on requesting hearings, gives helpful tips about what to bring to court, and connects users to other regional resources. Unlike other resources, RSL is a hub for reinstatement information, so it can also help drivers identify procedures specific to the court in which they seek to reinstate.
Beyond 180
We are team Beyond180 and have been collaborating with Community Ambassadors from the 180 Program. The 180 Program works to keep youth out of the juvenile justice system, bringing community leaders and prosecutors together to break the school-to-prison pipeline. The 180 Program consists of two elements: 1) the half-day 180 Workshop and 2) Beyond 180 follow-up aftercare. Participating youth avoid criminal prosecution by completing the 180 Workshop; thus it doesn’t affect future employment/education opportunities. The Workshop consists of inspiring representatives from the communities where youth live, many of whom experienced similar struggles as young people, large-group presentations, engaging ice-breaker activities, and small-group personal discussions, workshop participants learn to make better choices. Beyond 180 provides follow-up mentorship after the Workshop to help youth apply what they learned and supports their new 180 change. Youth voluntarily sign-up to be paired with a Community Ambassador who walk hand-in-hand with them to access the services they need and build a personal relationship with them to encourage them to continue on a positive path.
One of the problems Beyond180 was experiencing was the ability to efficiently and effectively keep track of existing youth documentation and being able to easily access all of the notes/documents specific to an individual. Our team needed to create a solution that would allow them easy access to these documents as well as take on the responsibility of automatically generating older files of youth that need follow ups. This makes staying in touch with each youth more manageable and much more efficient.
As our solution we created an API that wraps a relational database and manages all of these documents making them easily searchable and manageable. This enables community ambassadors to generate search results based on specific search criteria that will pull up the requested documents accordingly. As an aftercare program its crucial that ambassadors know which kids need follow ups as well as keeping in touch with them on a regular basis which is done through the management and tracking of their documents. Team Beyond180 built a program that can systematically provide these features.
